Hudson, a Maltese mix rescued from the East River, has been adopted by NYPD Harbor Unit Officer Jared Desalvo, who conducted the rescue. The case has received attention from the public and animal welfare supporters across the city.
Hudson's situation began on March 31, when she was seen struggling in the water near Pier 15 at the South Street Seaport. After being rescued by Officer Desalvo and his team, a six-week effort to locate her original owner was unsuccessful, leading to the decision to adopt her into Desalvo’s home. According to a Gothamist report, "Unfortunately, nobody came forward, but it presents a unique opportunity for me and my family. We'll be adopting Hudson, and she'll be in good care," said Desalvo.
Despite being rescued from the East River, the dog was given the name Hudson, referencing the Hudson River. She was initially treated for a respiratory infection while under shelter care. Interest in her recovery has remained strong among Officer Desalvo’s family and the public.
Hudson is adjusting to her new home on Staten Island, where she now has a custom dog bed, treats, and a variety of chew toys provided by Officer Desalvo's children, Salvatore and Stella. She has also been fitted with a GPS-enabled collar to help prevent future water-related incidents. The newly adopted pooch will be sharing her home with Bocce, the family's 15-year-old terrier. Desalvo, speaking to the New York Post, affirmed that Bocce "gets along great with other dogs, so they’ll be best buds," a statement reflective of the growing bond within the animal members of the DeSalvo household.
Desalvo’s decision to adopt Hudson follows the incident, highlighting his commitment to providing care and support. “I think it sets a good example in terms of compassion, making sure that we take care of those that need help, and it’s a unique situation when we get to actually do it,” he told the New York Post.
