To support hunters with disabilities, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry organized special spring turkey hunting events in Pike State Forest and Blue Rock State Forest. Before the regular spring hunting season, the hunts provided an accessible outdoor experience for those individuals. "These hunts are a highlight of our year—getting to share time in the woods with such an inspiring group of hunters and partners is a privilege," said Dan Balser, ODNR Division of Forestry Chief, in a statement obtained by the ODNR.

Sixteen hunters participated in the eighth annual Thunder in the Hills event in Pike State Forest, and eight turkeys were bagged. With the joint efforts of the Clinton County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and ODNR's divisions of Wildlife, Parks, and Watercraft, the hunt was deemed a success. Over 50 volunteers and organizations contributed to making the event more impactful, assisting the hunters throughout the hunt, as reported by ODNR.

The Blue Rock State Forest witnessed the 18th annual Wheelin’ Sportsmen hunt, which attracted twenty-three hunters, helped by more than 60 guides. Coordinated with the NWTF Wheelin’ Sportsmen program and local NWTF chapters, the event emphasized community involvement, receiving donations and volunteer support from local individuals and businesses. Only one turkey was taken during this event, highlighting the challenge and unpredictability inherent in hunting.

These specialized hunts had participants from diverse areas of Ohio, including disabled veterans, illustrating the inclusive spirit of the initiative. Each hunter was aided by a guide who, provided shotgun and ammunition by the hunter, offered assistance ranging from mobility support to turkey calling. Ohio's regular spring turkey hunting season, divided into the south and northeast zones, commenced on April 19 for the south zone and is set to open on May 3 for the northeast zone, as stated by ODNR.

Through these events and its wider efforts, the ODNR Division of Forestry promotes the sustainable management of Ohio's woodlands.
