In a landscape where collaboration is increasingly recognized as a pathway toward enhanced community security, the Joint Patrol program stands as a testament to the potential of such partnerships. Officer Thomas Schneider, who transitioned to the program in 2022 after serving with the Ohio State University Police Department (OSUPD) for years, recently shared insights into the impact and uniqueness of this initiative. In an article published by OSU's Department of Public Safety yesterday, Schneider explains the integrated approach to policing that the Joint Patrol fosters, now three years into the collaboration.
As an essential component of the program, four OSUPD officers, including Schneider, are paired with Columbus Police officers to patrol off-campus neighborhoods where many students reside—a tactful addition to customary city police patrols. "It is a unique experience that provides an opportunity for me to serve the university community in a way that I had not been able to do," Schneider told the Department of Public Safety. External to their jurisdiction but critical to their mission, these patrols implement security measures such as additional lights, cameras, and license plate readers, promising enhanced protection for students.
The Joint Patrol transcends the parameters of traditional patrols, providing a focused level of attention to the needs of the university community. Unlike conventional Columbus patrols, often backlogged with service calls, this alliance grants officers the luxury of time, time to delve deeply into the community's concerns. "The Joint Patrol program has a narrower focus of attention to our students' needs as well as the university community," Schneider explained via the Department of Public Safety, highlighting the specialized nature of the program.
Pooling resources and intelligence between the OSUPD and the Columbus Police Department (CPD) serves both entities in reaching their common goal: safeguarding the campus and its neighboring areas. The OSUPD's advanced video surveillance capability complements the CPD's extensive manpower and equipment. "During critical incidents, the communications center has provided critical information to both agencies in real-time," Schneider disclosed through the Department of Public Safety, emphasizing the strategic advantage of their combined efforts.
