As the golden rays of the sun beckon Ohioans outdoors, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control has issued a timely reminder to drink responsibly within the state's legal framework. According to information from a recent release, this comes just in time for patio season and the multitude of community events that Ohio has to offer.
With over 160 Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs) in Ohio, these zones allow adults to relax and enjoy a drink in the open air. However, as Division Superintendent Jackie DeGenova pointed out, a statement obtained by the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control, "We urge everyone to follow state laws and make responsible choices when it comes to alcohol consumption. By doing so, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all." Ohio stands as a patchwork of varying rules, and patrons must stay vigilant for signs that demarcate where alcohol can be legally consumed.
Permits are a crucial aspect of Ohio's alcohol regulations; patrons are not allowed to take alcoholic drinks outside of a liquor permit holder's establishment unless given special permission. This includes events with a temporary permit, so it's best to look out for posted signs or ask staff if you're unsure. Similarly, while DORA offers some flexibility with open container laws, bringing outside alcohol into these designated areas is a no-go, and non-permit establishments retain the right to bar DORA beverages from their premises.
Social responsibility takes center stage, and those of legal drinking age are reminded not only to drink themselves but to ensure the safety of others. Patrons are encouraged to eat, stay hydrated, and plan transportation ahead of time. Permit holders and their staff must continually check IDs and refuse service to those who appear intoxicated. And if one notices any infractions, reporting them to local enforcement or the Ohio Investigative Unit is the right call to action.
The reminders emphasize the state's dedication to upholding the law and the importance of personal accountability. It's in everyone's best interest to stay informed and follow the guidelines laid down by the Division to fully enjoy Ohio's vibrant patios and social gatherings safely and within the bounds of the law.
