Ohio State University at Marion has witnessed an innovative initiative by student veterans who have introduced a new beekeeping program to their campus prairie. Marine veterans Todd Lee and Eric Bailey have brought two hives to the Larry R. Yoder Prairie Learning Laboratory, enhancing the ecological health of this 11-acre Sandusky Plains tall grass restoration project that has been evolving since 1977.

Lee, a social work major, and Bailey, studying engineering technology, attended the Central Ohio Beekeepers Association (COBA) Veteran Beekeeping School. Their experience there inspired the idea to merge sustainability with the prairie's serenity. "I believe the bees serve multiple purposes,” Lee said in a statement obtained by Ohio State News. He emphasized how the beekeeping initiative contributes significantly to the overall goal of conserving the prairie's delicate ecosystem.

According to Bailey, the project inception followed an outreach event with COBA at Ohio State Marion. During the event, Bob and Claudia Bowers from the Central Ohio Beekeepers charitable foundation shared insights, encouraging veterans to explore beekeeping. Following the event, Lee suggested that the campus prairie be a potential sanctuary for beehives. “Todd had brought up the idea of, why don't we have bees at the prairie? The idea kind of took off from there,” Bailey told Ohio State News.
