To address the growing challenge of student mental health struggles, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has recognized 15 postsecondary institutions for their proactive efforts. An award ceremony was held at Temple University, with support from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and the JED Foundation. The recognition, called PA CARES — which stands for "Connect, Assess, Respond, Encourage, Support" — honors schools that have developed strong mental health and suicide prevention plans, in line with Act 1110, as reported by the Pennsylvania Government.
This recognition goes beyond simple praise. It reflects a deep commitment to creating supportive learning environments where students are cared for emotionally as well as academically. According to the Pennsylvania Government, these schools have taken real steps to make mental health resources available and accessible—resources that could ultimately save lives.
Dr. Lynette Kuhn, Deputy Secretary of Postsecondary and Higher Education, emphasized the importance of school staff who are engaged and responsive. She noted how essential it is for campus communities to encourage students to ask for help without fear or hesitation. The PA CARES initiative shows that Pennsylvania is prioritizing mental wellness as a key part of student success, as per the Pennsylvania Government.
