As the sun beams down on the waters of Pinellas County, boaters are reminded to prioritize safety before setting sail. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office recently took to social media to emphasize the importance of being well-equipped on the water. "Before hitting the seas – or gulf – make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment for a safe journey," the post begins, providing boaters with a checklist of essentials.

According to the post, a key item on this list is Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), which are mandatory for all passengers, and especially for children under 6 years of age who must wear them at all times aboard a moving vessel. The Sheriff's Office warns, "Remember that approximately half of all boating fatalities are the result of drowning," emphasizing the grave necessity of PFDs.

When visibility drops, signaling devices are lifesavers, literally. Boaters must have both visual and auditory means to signal their presence, such as flares and whistles respectively. "Visual distress signals" and "a sound-producing device" are stipulated by law to help avert collisions and aid in rescue operations in low visibility conditions, or during night-time when the risk is even higher.

Fire safety is another critical component to secure before departure. For boats with enclosed engine compartments or fuel tanks, a working fire extinguisher is compulsory; larger vessels exceeding 26 feet are required to carry at least two, to double down on fire suppression capabilities. While a comprehensive first aid kit might not be a legal requirement, it comes highly recommended to manage any medical emergencies that could arise in the open water.
