Commuters in Pittsburgh will need to find an alternate route starting this morning as the Herron Avenue Bridge shuts down for what could be a protracted closure. City officials confirmed the bridge's closure, which began at 8:00 AM today, highlighting concerns for public safety, following an inspection that uncovered structural issues necessitating immediate action.
Acting Chief Engineer Zack Workman specified that, "Following emergent findings from the City’s bridge inspection consultant and PennDOT, we are moving quickly to close the Herron Avenue Bridge in the interest of public safety," reported the City of Pittsburgh's website. For those affected by the closure, the city recommends a detour route that channels southbound traffic via Liberty Avenue to Bloomfield Bridge, and then on to Bigelow Boulevard.
The project, tentatively penciled in for a 2028 start date, has now gained new urgency as the city collaborates with PennDOT and inspection teams to explore possibilities that might allow the bridge to reopen safely at an earlier time.
Details on the bridge's structural issues and the timeline for its repair were not immediately provided, but a thorough analysis is underway to determine the next steps. For updates on the bridge status and repair plans, the city advises checking its official website regularly.
