Placer County’s Board of Supervisors adopted an amendment to the county’s 2021-29 Housing Element that rezones 15 sites for higher-density housing. This change is intended to meet a state requirement for more affordable housing units. Over the past two years, the county’s Planning Division has updated policies to address housing needs as part of California’s affordable housing efforts, according to the Placer County.

Placer County approved zoning changes to allow 3,409 lower-income housing units. After public hearings and workshops, planners selected 15 sites for rezoning, including two county-owned properties. The changes were reviewed under the program’s environmental impact report before approval. The new zoning allows up to 30 units per acre, increasing potential housing density.

Placer County has completed the final step in implementing Housing Element Program 1 to meet the state’s requirement to address a shortfall of affordable housing. Planning Director Chris Pahule said, “Today’s action marks the final step in our process of implementing Housing Element Program 1 and meeting the county's state-mandated obligation to meet a shortfall of affordable housing.” The updated Housing Element includes new policies, provisions for lower-income residents, and environmental considerations. More information is available through the county’s official channels.
