In the tech-steeped surveillance age where law enforcement routinely leverages gadgetry to combat crime, a teenage car theft suspect found themselves at the intersection of an old-fashioned car chase and cutting-edge drone technology. The eyes in the sky followed a stolen car onto Alhambra Road near Huntington Drive on Tuesday, after police officers in Alhambra initiated an attempted traffic stop, as reported by ABC7. Despite the suspect's flight, the drone kept a digital tether on the vehicle, resulting in an ongoing pursuit that transitioned from a high-speed chase to a game of hide and not-so-seek on foot when the teenager abandoned the hijacked vehicle.
According to the Alhambra Police Department's Facebook post, officers observed the stolen car while patrolling the Westmont and Valley locale, setting off what turned into a high-risk anecdote of cat and mouse, the bolting suspect seemed to believe that speeding away could mean an easy escape but that's not precisely how events unfolded in Alhambra. The suspect, perhaps underestimating the persistence or the technological assets of the law, ended the vehicular evasion but continued in an all-too-calm walk northbound on Palm.
Captured on video, the suspect's nonchalant stroll down the sidewalk, which seemed like a gambit to feign detachment from the chaotic chase that preceded it, did little to deceive the officers. As shown in the footage, the police, guided by the drone's aerial intelligence, quickly caught up to the suspect. The officers then closed the net, and the suspect's freedom was short-lived as he was placed under arrest without further incident.
