A man, wanted in connection with an earlier violent domestic abuse assault, is dead following a shooting by a Racine police officer last night. The incident occurred near 17th and Franklin Streets, after officers located and tried to apprehend the suspect at approximately 11:12 p.m., as reported by FOX6 News.
Attempting to evade arrest, the man crashed his vehicle roughly half a block away while fleeing. Armed with a handgun, he exited his vehicle and, according to police, began to raise it in the presence of officers. This action resulted in an officer shooting the man, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, as noted by TMJ4.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), with assistance from the State Patrol and the State Crime Lab, as shared in a statement by the Racine Police Department. The involved officer carried and was recording the incident with a body camera. Now, as per departmental policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
There were multiple streets blocked off, captured by News Chopper 12 this morning, which happened in the aftermath of the shooting. The investigation, being led by the Wisconsin DOJ, intends to be a thorough inquiry before the case is passed on to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office, as mentioned by WISN. The body camera footage worn by an officer at the event's time aims to provide clearer insight into the precise turn of events which ended with the fatality.
