May marks the start of National Bike Month, and the City of Raleigh is launching a series of events to encourage community participation. Across the country, cities are promoting the benefits of cycling—whether for commuting, exercise, or recreation. In Raleigh, Commute Smart Raleigh is hosting free events throughout the month to support and expand local cycling activity. Details and a full schedule can be found on the city’s Bike Month webpage.
In an interesting overlap of commemorative months, bicycle enthusiasts have a unique opportunity on May 3. The Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC), in collaboration with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) and Raleigh Sister Cities, is setting out on the 2nd annual Raleigh Historic Bike Ride. As reported by Raleigh's own website, the event marries May's Preservation Month with Bike Month for an exploratory ride steeped in history – and inclusivity. This year's 4-mile jaunt will feature sites significant to the LGBTQIA+ community, as showcased in the recent LGBTQIA+ Historic Context Study.
There’s something for every cyclist, whether you're new to two wheels or are the seasoned rider. The historically themed route will pass by notable landmarks such as the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel, Cameron Court Apartments, and Legends Nightclub, among others. History buffs will be intrigued to hear RHDC volunteers sharing stories of these important locales. To take part in this blend of biking and history, riders can register for the event right on the city’s website.
The ride begins and ends at Nash Square Park. Participants are expected to bring their own bicycles and safety gear, though Cardinal Share e-bikes are available for those without bikes. Water and restroom facilities are not provided before, after, or along the route. Digital maps can be accessed via QR codes, and group bike leads will be available to assist with navigation.
