The North Carolina State Board of Elections welcomed Sam Hayes as its new Executive Director on May 16. Hayes, formerly general counsel for the Office of the North Carolina Speaker of the House, steps into the role vacated by Karen Brinson Bell, whose term concluded the day prior. With a legal background from practicing in D.C. to advising on the development of election policy and defending election law, Hayes is equipped to navigate the intricacies of state election administration.
According to a press release from the NC State Board of Elections, the appointment was made official on May 7. Having worked with key governmental departments, including the Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of State Treasurer, Hayes also served as general counsel in North Carolina before his tenure in Washington, D.C.
The announcement by the NC State Board of Elections was accompanied by commendations from within the organization. "Sam Hayes brings a wealth of election and government experience to this role. He knows North Carolina and has a firm grip on election administration in our state," State Board member Stacy “Four” Eggers was quoted saying in the board's press release. The statements reflect confidence in Hayes' understanding of local electoral frameworks and his aptitude for the oversight necessary in his new position.
Upon commencing his leadership position, Hayes recognized the challenges and complexities inherent in managing the elections of North Carolina. "I’d like to thank the State Board for this appointment – it’s an honor. Managing North Carolina’s elections is no easy task, but I have confidence in the capabilities of this office," Hayes said, underscoring his readiness to uphold the state's electoral processes, as reported in the press release by the NC State Board of Elections.
Looking ahead, Hayes' tenure marks a commitment to the continuity of fair elections and adherence to legal precedents set forth in North Carolina. His background suggests a blend of legal acumen and practical experience that will fuel his stewardship of the State Board of Elections.
