Early this morning, fire department personnel in San Antonio carried out a high-water rescue operation along Highway 90 on the city's west side. Transguide officials reported that both eastbound and westbound access roads at Leon Creek were closed due to the flooding incident.
The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) was called to the scene just after 6 a.m., where they found a box truck and a second vehicle stranded in high water. In a display of swift action, firefighting crews utilized a ladder rescue to assist the drivers of the two vehicles. According to a statement obtained by KSAT, the SAFD spokesperson confirmed the successful extraction of both individuals, despite the vehicles remaining unrecovered at the time due to the elevated water levels.
This section of Old Highway 90 West, including Leon Creek Greenway South, is recognized by officials for its susceptibility to flooding during periods of heavy rain, according to a KENS 5 report. It's this predilection for water accumulation that proved treacherous for the two drivers and prompted the intervention of SAFD.
In light of the incident, Bexar County Flood issued a reminder on the dangers of low-water crossings during flood conditions. "If you see water over the road, please turn around and find a different route. It is illegal to drive around barricades at low water crossings," they alerted drivers, underscoring the oft-repeated caution, "Turn around, don't drown," as per a report by KENS 5.
