The community of Santa Ana is grappling with the aftermath of a violent incident that occurred outside of Santa Ana High School on Wednesday afternoon, where a 14-year-old student was fatally stabbed, and two others were seriously injured. As per the KTLA report, the incident involved two male suspects, described by police as Hispanic males and students at the high school, who fled the scene but later turned themselves in.
According to a NBC Los Angeles report, the two suspects, ages 15 and 17, turned themselves in on Wednesday night, accompanied by their families. Officer Natalie Garcia with the Santa Ana Police Department suggested that the stabbing may have been gang-related, although details surrounding what led up to the violence remain to be fully understood. In attempting to provide a sense of normalcy, the Santa Ana Unified School District canceled all after-school activities for Wednesday and arranged for crisis counselors to be available for students requiring support.
The Santa Ana Police Department responded to the stabbing call just before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, finding three students wounded right outside the school’s entrance. A witness described the chaotic scene to FOX 11, saying, "At first it was a fight, and then it escalated to the kid pulling out a knife, and yeah, he just started stabbing… because I guess self-defense, but that's not a reasonable answer." Another parent, Crystal Duffy, who spoke with FOX 11, expressed her heartbreak for the parents and noted how kids no longer feel safe at school.
The names of the two wounded, stable teens, ages 15 and 16, have not been released, nor have the identities of the turned-in suspects. Following the tragic event, a makeshift memorial with flowers and candles was seen growing outside the school, as mentioned in a CBS News article. The school district, while confirming the unfortunate loss of life, said, "Our thoughts are with the family of the student who passed, and with all those impacted by this senseless act of violence," and ensured an increased police presence on Thursday.
The full story behind this tragedy continues to gradually unfold, with investigators actively unraveling the circumstances that led to this deadly confrontation. Anyone with information on the attack is urged to call the Santa Ana Police Department at 714-245-8049.
