A tragic multi-vehicle collision on the outer loop of I-495 in Montgomery County has resulted in the death of a 77-year-old Silver Spring resident, Maryland State Police reported. Diane Karras, identified as the deceased, was transported to Suburban Hospital following the crash, where she was pronounced dead. The incident, involving a chain reaction triggered by a tow truck, occurred yesterday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m., near Maryland Route 187, also known as Old Georgetown Road.
The cascade of events began when the tow truck hit the rear of a Honda Civic, driven by Karras, which led to a series of collisions involving three other vehicles: a Ford Ranger, a Chevrolet Traverse, and a Dodge Grand Caravan. The impact caused by the tow truck, which reportedly failed to control its speed and careened off the road before reentering, prompted a domino effect, ultimately involving five vehicles. In a statement obtained by Maryland State Police, "the tow truck failed to control its speed and struck the rear of a Honda Civic, operated by Karras, before veering off the left shoulder of the roadway."
The Ford Ranger's driver also required medical attention and was transported to Suburban Hospital by ambulance. Emergency services and law enforcement responded to manage traffic and provide support, with the Montgomery County Police Department and the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration handling road closures that lasted approximately three hours.
Maryland State Police's Crash Team is spearheading the inquiry into the crash. It is working in tandem with the Office of the State’s Attorney for Montgomery County to determine potential charges. While the investigation remains active and ongoing, final determinations and subsequent charges are pending, as per the Maryland State Police.
Further updates are expected as the authorities continue their thorough examination of the events leading up to the fatal incident.
