A Southfield man is under scrutiny facing felony charges after he was accused of assaulting and intimidating a Jewish man with antisemitic slurs and threats. Toby Jacob Rhodes, who is 54 years old, was arraigned yesterday, with one count of felony assault and one count of ethnic intimidation, as reported by The Detroit News.
According to the reports, a Jewish man was walking past Rhodes' home when the accused allegedly shouted slurs and wielded a power tool in a threatening manner. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized the importance of public safety, stating, "Every person has a right to walk down the street without fearing violence or intimidation." She doubled down on the repercussions of such acts, asserting that "harassment because of someone's race, religion, creed, or sexuality is never acceptable," according to an announcement from her office covered by WZZM13.
Details on the bonds and fines Rhodes may face upon conviction vary between sources. The Detroit News notes he could face up to six years in prison and fines totaling $7,000.
While The Daily Tribune reports a possible four-year prison term and/or a $2,000 fine for the assault charge, and up to two years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine for the intimidation charge. Rhodes was released on a $1,000 personal bond after his arraignment.
This incident comes in the wake of a recent report from the Anti-Defamation League that revealed a surge in antisemitic incidents across the United States, reaching a record high last year. The report highlighted an increase of 344% over the past five years, with occurrences in every state and over 10% in New York City alone. The classifications included 196 assaults, 2,606 acts of vandalism, 647 bomb threats, and 962 propaganda incidents linked to white supremacist groups, as detailed by The Detroit News.
The representation for Rhodes, attorney Farris Frank Haddad, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter. Rhodes' next hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on June 4, where the court will further address these allegations.
