The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office took to social media this week to honor the commitment and hard work of its corrections staff during National Correctional Officers Week, a time designated to acknowledge those who manage the day-to-day operations of detention facilities.
Corrections officers are hailed for providing "care, custody, and control to all inmates housed in the St. Johns County Detention Center," aiming to foster a secure setting for inmates, the public, and their fellow staff members, however, the demanding nature of their job often goes unnoticed by the public this acknowledgment aims to bring their contributions to light, as per St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
During a recent meeting, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners formally recognized these correctional officers and employees, a nod to their essential role in the justice system. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office expressed its gratitude in a Facebook post, saying, "We appreciate all you do!"
The recognition week serves as a reminder of the oft-overlooked contributions of correctional officers, who navigate the complexities of prison management, encompassing both the maintenance of order within the institution and the welfare of individuals in custody; such roles have only grown more challenging in recent years as the criminal justice system faces increased scrutiny and calls for reform.
