The City of Sterling Heights is gearing up for its 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in a collaboration that merges the event with the popular Dodge Park Thursdays. According to an announcement on the City of Sterling Heights's website, the day's schedule is packed with free activities suitable for all ages, starting with a dance workshop at 10 a.m., facilitated by Detroit's Abigail School of Dance, along with an array of offerings at the Sterling Heights Public Library including food, books, and crafts.
Commencing at 3 p.m., the Dodge Park Farmers Market will come alive with the spirit of Juneteenth, hosting nearly 30 vendor and information booths spotlighting black-owned businesses and organizations, as the line-up of events continues into the evening with music and dance lessons set for 5 p.m. at the Patios ‘n’ Pints beer garden, next to the Upton House Museum, and The Prolifics, a Motown Tribute Band, slated to close the festivities with a performance at 7 p.m. on the Dodge Park Amphitheatre Stage as part of Music in the Park's 50th anniversary season.
The daylong commemoration is a gesture that honors the enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, who remained uninformed of their freedom for two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made. The dance workshop, sponsored by the Friends of the Sterling Heights Library, carries the intention to represent through dance the strength, endurance, and emancipation echoed in the struggle and moment of freedom for African Americans, "Through choreography rooted in strength, resilience, and liberation, dancers will embody the struggle, the waiting and the moment of freedom," as described by the City of Sterling Heights.
Ensuring an educational twist to the celebration, the Library's event will feature soul food sampling and a book giveaway for children and teenagers, as well as a workshop on crafting a beaded bracelet or Kente weaving mat, with all activities being sponsored by Metroparks, this component aims for participants to both indulge in the delicacies of Soul Food and grasp its historical significance, registration for these events will kick-off on June 5th, as Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor emphasizes the importance of Juneteenth as "a powerful reminder of our shared journey toward freedom and justice," and articulates the city's dedication to commemorating this day as a commitment to unity and the ongoing effort of creating an inclusive community, according to the Sterling Heights website.
