Sterling Heights is preparing to honor its heroes with an event steeped in patriotism and community. The city will host its 46th Annual Memorial Day Parade on May 26, with a theme designed to reflect reverence and unity: "We Are One: Honoring Our Past, Uniting Our Future."
The occasion's solemnity will begin at 9 a.m. with a Memorial Day Ceremony between the City Hall and the Police Department. This year's ceremony will feature Jack Jones, a 104-year-old World War II veteran and Sterling Heights resident serving as Grand Marshal. According to an announcement by the City of Sterling Heights, Mayor Michael C. Taylor and Arts Commission Chairperson Jeanne Schabath-Lewis are also expected to deliver remarks. Enriching the emotional ambiance, the Motor City Blend Chorus is set to provide a musical backdrop to the morning's events.
Spectators will be treated to a special flyover by historic Tuskegee Airmen WWII aircraft at around 9:30 a.m., adding a dynamic layer to the ceremony. Following the aerial display, attendees will enjoy the 1st Michigan Colonial Fife & Drum Corps performance.
The parade rolls out at 10 a.m. from Dodge Park, winding its way through the roundabout and down Dodge Park Road, and wrapping up near Metro Parkway at the Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies. Parking will be available along the parade route and in designated areas, such as in front of the Police Department and Richard J. Notte Civic Center. More than 60 entries, including floats, veterans, and high school marching bands, are expected to contribute to the fervor and spectacle of the parade, including the fan-favorite Muslim Shriners, known for their energetic ensemble of clowns, cowboys, and motorcyclists.
