The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecasts that easterly trade winds will strengthen from moderate to locally breezy starting on Tuesday. Today, winds are expected to be lighter, but a high-pressure ridge north of the Hawaiian Islands will cause a steady increase in wind strength, according to the National Weather Service.
“These heights indicate a fairly typical trade wind weather pattern with brief passing showers,” the National Weather Service Honolulu reports. This pattern is expected to continue through Wednesday with limited shower activity. An upper-level trough may bring heavier showers and possible thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday. Trade winds will maintain cloud bands across the islands. Aviation interests should be aware that brief passing showers could affect visibility in windward and mountain areas through Tuesday. No AIRMETs are currently in effect.
For boaters, no Small Craft Advisory is currently in effect, but the National Weather Service in Honolulu states that "a slight uptick in trades starting Tuesday will likely lead to a SCA issuance for the typical windy waters around Maui and the Big Island." Trade winds will cause small, choppy waves on east-facing shores, while south-facing shores may see a modest increase in waves later in the week from a south swell. Winds and showers may increase gradually during the week, especially near westward slopes and mountains, with more stable conditions expected by the weekend.
