Following weeks of investigation, the Metropolitan Police Department has made an arrest in a case of a fatal assault at a Navy Yard area apartment complex. According to the MPD's official release, the incident occurred on April 23, 2025, when officers were dispatched around 7:51 p.m. to the 400 block of M Street, Southeast. They found an adult male victim, later identified as 77-year-old Bernard Williams of Southeast, DC, unresponsive and with multiple injuries.
The man accused of the crime, 48-year-old Walter Parker, was apprehended by responding officers who managed to calmly to take him into custody. Initially, Parker was charged with Aggravated Assault, Carrying a Pistol without a License, and Destruction of Property. However, after the victim's condition worsened, these charges were significantly upgraded when Williams succumbed to his injuries five days later. The assailant now faces First Degree Murder charges as of May 12, in light of the medical examiner's ruling that Williams' death was a homicide resulting from complications of blunt force trauma.
Following the death of Williams, detectives collaborated closely with the United States Attorney's Office, an action which ultimately led to the increase in the severity of the legal consequences Parker is facing. The announcement made on May 13th also revealed that, pursuant to a DC Superior Court Booking Order, the charges against Parker were heightened from assault to First Degree Murder.
Community members were both relieved and shaken to see such violence emerge within the confines of their residential spaces. As the legal process unfolds, the District's commitment to pursuing justice has become clear. The precise motivations behind the assault still remain a matter of speculation, expected to be thoroughly examined in the upcoming court proceedings against Parker. Details surrounding the investigation remain tightly held, however, what is known has stirred conversations on public safety and community well-being in Southeast, DC.
