A student from Thurston High School in Redford Township, Michigan, was shot in the hand while on a school bus. As reported by CBS News Detroit, the incident occurred in front of the school at roughly 2:45 p.m. yesterday. The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, is stable after being taken to the hospital.

Redford Township Police have launched an investigation into the shooting. Even as details remain scarce, authorities have reassured the community that no active threat persists. The firearm involved has been recovered. Despite the absence of an immediate threat, Thurston High School has decided to temporarily halt classes today, a step perhaps meant to offer space for the community to begin to process the violence that unfolded in its midst.

The school superintendent addressed the community via a statement, which FOX 2 Detroit obtained: "We want to reassure our community that there is no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the campus. However, out of an abundance of caution and to allow our school community time to process and heal, Thurston High School will be closed on Thursday, May 8, 2025. All other schools in the district will remain open, and afterschool activities at Thurston are canceled for that day."

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The Redford Township Police Department encourages anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Detective Ryan Eddings by email at [email protected] or by phone at 313-387-2575.
