Residents in Honolulu can expect changing trade winds and slight chances of showers this weekend. The National Weather Service reports a weakened high pressure ridge north of the Hawaiian Islands will bring moderate trade winds and occasional light sea breezes, especially on the western slopes with terrain. No severe weather watches or advisories have been issued.
Satellite images this morning show "fairly stable clouds" moving with easterly trade winds. A temperature inversion around 6,000 feet indicates a stable atmosphere with limited showers. Trade wind speeds will increase by Friday afternoon due to a shift in the subtropical jet stream, then turn lighter from east to southeast Sunday through Monday. Northeast to east winds will be light to moderate today, becoming strong by Friday as a surface ridge north of the islands strengthens, possibly causing Small Craft Advisory conditions. South-southwest swells will raise surf on south-facing shores to near average levels, and north-northwest swells will increase surf on north- and west-facing shores, according to the National Weather Service.
The island’s air travelers can expect generally favorable conditions with overall VFR and a "hybrid moderate trade wind pattern." Trade winds may increase to breezy levels by Friday afternoon. Skies will remain mostly clear with no AIRMETs in effect. The National Weather Service - Honolulu advises that volcanic smog may affect air quality, particularly on smaller islands. Sea breezes are forecast to strengthen along the sheltered western slopes of each island. Residents and visitors should monitor updates on air quality and temperature changes.
