Two individuals have died as a result of a reported stabbing and subsequent officer-involved shooting in North Hollywood, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident took place on the afternoon of Friday near the 7800 block of Beck Avenue.
Upon arrival, LAPD officers discovered a woman who had suffered multiple stab wounds. NBC Los Angeles describes a scene where the male suspect was confronted by police and refused to drop his weapon, resulting in at least one officer opening fire. The identity of the weapon in question has not been disclosed. Following the officer-involved shooting, both the woman and the male suspect were transported to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The proximity of this tragedy to a local elementary school added to the distress of the situation. Arminta Street Elementary, located near the scene, was placed on lockdown as students were outdoors at the time of the incident. One witness, Walter Lorente, recounted to KTLA the chaos that ensued as "kids were all running away, panicking", a sentiment similarly expressed by a fourth-grade student, Kaylah, who told FOX 11, "everybody was crying inside the classrooms."
Despite the violence that unfolded near the school, no children or officers were reported injured in the incident. As the investigation into the event continues, authorities have yet to release the identities of the suspect and the victim or details surrounding their relationship, as stated in the reports from both KTLA and NBC Los Angeles. Law enforcement officials have cordoned off roads in the vicinity and have been requesting anyone with additional information or surveillance footage to contact the LAPD at 1-877-527-3247.
