The Wake County Animal Center is teetering on the brink of capacity, with a mere handful of kennels left unfilled. According to their latest numbers, the Center is currently playing host to 236 dogs, two puppies, 59 cats, 197 kittens, plus a pair of rabbits and two rats. The situation is so tight, space-wise, that without immediate adoption or foster actions, difficult decisions may loom on the horizon.
"We are doing everything we can to avoid having to make heartbreaking choices," Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas articulated to the press. Her plea is to the local community, which she hopes will rise, as it has before, to meet the needs of these animals seeking homes. With efforts to sidestep an overcrowding crisis, the Center is rolling out a waiver of adoption fees for pets overcoming a 15-day stay on the adoption floor. The offer stands starting today, and extends through next Sunday, as per Wake County's announcement.
Published by Wake County, the facility has broadcast several actions the public might engage in to lend support. Interested individuals can adopt or foster a pet, volunteer their time, purchase necessary items from Amazon Wish List, reunite strays with their owners, or independently rehome pets when possible. The Center continues to echo a need for community involvement in this urgent matter.
