As Wake County grapples with the onset of record-breaking temperatures, local officials are once again issuing a call to action for residents to contribute to the 'Cool for Wake' program—a seasonal relief effort that aims to provide air conditioners, fans, and financial assistance to those in need. The program stands as a bulwark against the rising mercury that has swelled to dangerously high levels, endangering particularly the most vulnerable populations in the county including older adults, children, and individuals with certain medical conditions.
As reported by Wake County's official news announcement, chilling statistics from the previous year show that Wake County EMS attended to 250 heat-related emergency calls. Shinica Thomas, as identified on the Wake County Board of Commissioners, stated last year's statistics as evidence that "the heartbreaking reality of what extreme heat can do" to susceptible demographics such as the elderly and infirm, noting the insufficient access to adequate cooling solutions as a significant issue.
'Cool for Wake' is squarely focusing on the collection of new or gently used window or portable air-conditioning units this year, pivoting somewhat from its prior emphasis on fans. Monetary contributions are also highlighted as a critical need, with Shinica Thomas underscoring the gravity of the situation and the importance of community support, "Every summer, we see the heartbreaking reality of what extreme heat can do, especially to our older adults, children and neighbors with health challenges," she told Wake County News. "The fact is, not everyone in Wake County has the means to stay cool, and that puts lives at risk. We’re asking our community to step up and help save lives."
All donations made to the initiative are pledged to reach families in need directly. The administrative costs, by commitment of the Wake County Government, will not subtract from any dollar donated—ensuring the entirety of contributions are funneled into the hands of those struggling against the heat.
