As the summer heat intensifies, Wake County is making a push to protect its most vulnerable residents from the rising temperatures. Cool for Wake, the county's seasonal relief program, is calling for public support through donations of air conditioners, fans, or funds to help prevent heat-related illnesses and deaths.

Last year, a disheartening number of 250 heat-related emergency calls were answered by Wake County EMS, which, according to a statement from the county, serves as a stern reminder of the perils that sweltering conditions pose to the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Particularly at risk are individuals dwelling in homes that lack air conditioning. In homes without air conditioning, older adults, children, and individuals with medical conditions are at a heightened risk for heat-related issues, as conveyed by Wake County's report.

"Every summer, we see the heartbreaking reality of what extreme heat can do, especially to our older adults, children and neighbors with health challenges," said Shinica Thomas from the Wake County Board of Commissioners, as reported by Wake County's news release. “The fact is, not everyone in Wake County has the means to stay cool, and that puts lives at risk. We're asking our community to step up and help save lives.”

This year, while still accepting new fans, the focus is firmly on the collection of new or gently used air-conditioning units and financial gifts, which are now the most critical needs, pivoting from past years' collection efforts. With every dollar donated going straight to families in need in the county, the administrative costs are being shouldered entirely by Wake County Government to ensure that 100% of contributions alleviate the hardship of those striving to survive the punishing heat. While new fans will still be accepted, air-conditioning units and monetary donations have grown to become the paramount concerns.
