Wake Forest is gearing up for Bike Safety Month with a free event aimed at educating young cyclists and their parents on the essentials of bike safety. Scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Bicycle Safety Fair will be part of the day's Meet in the Street festivities, taking place in the Town Hall’s Brooks Street parking lot at 301 S. Brooks St., according to Wake Forest’s official announcement.

Designed for kids ages five to 14, along with their parents, the fair provides practical lessons through an obstacle course simulating real-world scenarios. The course aims to instill vital skills like automobile scanning and correct riding techniques. Wake Forest’s Planning Department notes that this is an opportunity "to teach safe bicycle riding skills" while navigating common road hazards such as potholes and unexpected obstacles. A signed waiver by a parent or legal guardian will be required for minors to participate.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own gear, but the town has made provisions for those who might arrive unprepared. "Loaner helmets and bicycles will also be available on a first-come, first-serve basis," the Town of Wake Forest states, ensuring that no child is left out due to lack of equipment.

Furthermore, the event will offer guidance beyond the obstacle course. Attendees can learn about helmet fitting, bike maintenance, and safe attire. These sessions aim to prepare adults with the ABC’s of bicycling, and get their bikes road ready. The town is also providing Bike-Walk-Run Wake Forest maps, which detail the bicycle-friendly routes throughout the area, showcasing paths and greenways for enthusiast enjoyment.

With safety being a shared responsibility, the Wake Forest's commitment to fostering a bike-friendly community is commendable and the Bicycle Safety Fair is a testament to that. For additional information on this and other events, be sure to check out the Town of Wake Forest's news release.
