Wisconsin is beckoning adventurers of all stripes to its abundance of natural splendors during its 13th annual Free Fun Weekend on June 7-8. According to a press release by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the state is waiving the usual state park admission fees, fishing licenses, and trail passes to encourage visitors to explore its outdoor offerings.

The upcoming weekend isn't just any excursion into the wilderness—it commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System. Park enthusiasts and first-timers alike are invited to roam free across over 120 properties that span 50 state parks, 15 state forests, and 44 state trails. DNR Bureau Director of Parks and Recreation Management, Steve Schmelzer, said, "Free Fun Weekend is a great opportunity to join us to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System." Schmelzer added, "Whether it’s your 100th visit or your first visit, you are invited to explore the more than 120 properties across the state," as mentioned on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website.

In line with the fishing-friendly focus of the weekend, Justine Hasz, DNR Bureau Director of Fisheries Management, highlighted the opportune moment to indulge in angling without the necessity of an annual fishing license. "This is a great chance to try fishing or catch a meal," Hasz explained on the Wisconsin DNR. For those without equipment, tackle loaner sites are available, and the Wisconsin Fishing Finder is on-hand to assist in locating prime fishing spots.

Free fishing clinics are also on the agenda at various state and municipal locales, offering instructions for those new to the sport. Interested visitors can check out the DNR Events calendar and the Wisconsin State Parks webpage for further details. In observance of Invasive Species Action Month, the state urges users of the wilderness to do their part by cleaning equipment after use and obeying firewood regulations. Safety remains paramount with life jackets, boat lights after sunset, and the wearing of helmets while riding ATVs emphasized as critical precautions.

The DNR has made boat launches accessible and reminds boaters that vessels must be registered, a process available online or by mail. As Free Fun Weekend opens up the natural wealth of Wisconsin, those who find themselves captivated by the state's outdoor charms have the option to purchase annual fishing licenses, trail passes, or 12-month vehicle admission stickers to maintain their explorations throughout the year.
