The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is calling all would-be deer hunters to apply for their 2025 Learn to Hunt Deer program. With a deadline of July 1 for applications, the Sandhill Wildlife Area is poised to become an educational hub for new hunters looking to understand the basics, from firearm safety to ethical hunting practices. as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Spanning a substantial 9,150 acres, Sandhill Wildlife Area is offering burgeoning hunters aged 12-15, along with adults 16 and older who lack experience in deer hunting with a firearm, the chance to attend their workshops ahead of a two-day hunt this November 8-9. Participants, according to the program rules, will not be alone as they each require an accompanying chaperone. Important to note is the $40 registration fee, an amount arguably small when considering the comprehensive nature of the instruction it covers.

Workshop content will dive into various topics integral to the sport – these range from understanding deer biology and the principles of management to safely handling firearms. The program insists on the completion of a Hunter Education course before the November hunt for all participants and their mentors, ensuring a foundational knowledge before setting foot in the field. "The winter of 2024-25 was the eleventh consecutive mild winter, according to the Winter Severity Index at Sandhill, and fawn recruitment is projected to be favorable as we have received ample spring rains," Darren Ladwig, DNR wildlife biologist, explained the favorable conditions for the program's success, as per the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Furthermore, the DNR emphasizes the dual benefit of the program – not only does it provide an invaluable learning experience for newcomers to hunting, but it also helps the department meet its deer harvest goals. With curated workshops scheduled for August 20, 22, and 23, the program aims to instill responsible, ethical hunter behavior in all participants. According to Ladwig, "This Learn to Hunt gives new hunters a good opportunity to try deer hunting while helping us reach our deer harvest goal for 2025," as mentioned on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website.
