As residents of Juneau County faced the terror of a rapidly spreading wildfire, they got a respite as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local fire crews managed to get the situation under control. The 80-acre Warthog Fire that swept through the towns of Cutler and Kingston, forcing evacuations of approximately 40 homes, has now been contained, allowing homeowners to safely return to their properties. The efforts of the response teams and the activation of the Southwest District Incident Management Team played crucial roles in protecting the community from further harm.
With the fire's origin still under investigation, the DNR and supporting emergency personnel had been actively working the scene. According to a release by the DNR, eleven engines, six tractor plows, two air attack planes, and two Wisconsin Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopters were deployed to combat the blaze. The situation was further compounded by critical fire danger conditions due to the day's weather, which included warm temperatures, low relative humidity, and windy conditions, urging the DNR to suspend outdoor burning in the affected area.
Residents were evacuated from the towns of Kingston and the community of Mather as the fire, fed by pine and marsh grass, spread in a northeast direction. Several local fire departments and law enforcement agencies assisted with the evacuation process, ensuring people could evacuate to safety promptly. While no injuries have been reported, the event surely reminded the community of the ever-present danger wildfires present and the importance of timely and coordinated disaster response efforts.
The DNR has been keeping the public informed about wildfire reports and burning restrictions through their Facebook page and their website. As reported by the DNR's announcement, additional resources had been ordered to the fire to assist in controlling and ultimately extinguishing it.
