A tragic single-vehicle accident claimed the life of a 25-year-old man early yesterday morning on Detroit's Lodge Freeway. CBS News Detroit reports that the incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. near the exit to Chicago Boulevard. The young man was driving an SUV when it departed the road, went up an embankment, hit a tree, and then rolled back onto the roadway, ultimately catching fire.
Michigan State Police were alerted to the fiery scene after witnesses observed the SUV blocking traffic. According to The Detroit News, the driver had been ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. By the time authorities arrived, the SUV was on fire, and the man had already succumbed to his injuries, dying at the scene. No other passengers were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.
In light of the fatal accident, Michigan State Police are underscoring the importance of seat belt use. "We are reminding drivers to wear their seatbelts," First Lieutenant Mike Shaw stated. Audacy reported Shaw commenting that "Not only will it keep you behind the wheel, it will keep you inside the vehicle if it rolls over." It has not yet been confirmed whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The man's identity and details surrounding his city of residence have not been released to the public. Investigations by Michigan State Police into the precise sequence of events leading up to the accident are still ongoing. This crash pends further investigation and upon the reports from the Medical Examiner (ME).
