Two individuals have been taken into custody in Apple Valley following a reported mail theft, with the quick action of a local resident playing a crucial role. Just after midnight on Tuesday, deputies responded to a tip regarding a suspected mail theft on Sitting Bull Road. A vigilant citizen had noticed suspicious activity and promptly alerted authorities, providing a vehicle description that helped law enforcement swiftly intervene.
Deputies from the Apple Valley Station encountered the suspects' vehicle, a black SUV. According to the San Bernardino Sheriff-Coroner Department, a traffic stop led to the detention of Monica Taylor, a 40-year-old female from Victorville, and Charles Miller, a 24-year-old male resident of Apple Valley. The search of their vehicle yielded multiple pieces of mail not addressed to them, as well as a quantity of what appeared to be methamphetamine.
Under Proposition 36, which amended previous laws considered contributing to rising cases of theft, homelessness, and drug addiction, those arrested face new charges that could lead to enhanced sentencing. This legislative change aims to address the aforementioned issues more effectively. The suspects were booked at the High Desert Detention Center, with Taylor facing additional charges for drug possession and petty theft, given her record, and Miller charged with possession of stolen mail.
Taylor managed to post bail and was consequently released, while Miller's bail has been set at $30,000. The authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to step forward. The Apple Valley Sheriff's Station urges individuals to contact them at (760) 240-7400 or reach out via the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78CRIME, as anonymity is assured for those who prefer it.
