Amid the "No Kings" protests that took place nationwide, an incident in Huntington Beach highlighted tensions when an armed man, Eduardo Pineda, 25, was arrested after trying to instigate a fight. According to NBC Los Angeles, Pineda, who had active warrants for his arrest and was a convicted felon, was found with a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband. The confrontation was reported to have occurred during the protest against President Donald Trump and his policies.
As protesters rallied in one of California’s well-known Republican strongholds, Huntington Beach, Pineda was spotted waving a Mexican flag and challenging a pedestrian to a fight. Trying to maintain peace, the Huntington Beach Police Department intervened, as KTLA reports. Further investigation revealed Pineda's prior felony convictions for auto theft and robbery and multiple misdemeanors. The police department stressed its commitment to facilitating peaceful public demonstrations while addressing any unlawful or threatening behavior.
Meanwhile, the ripple effects of the "No Kings" rallies radiated beyond Huntington Beach, with the San Gabriel Valley Tribune detailing a series of disturbances across Southern California. In Los Angeles, 38 arrests capped off a day of demonstrations, where minor skirmishes with law enforcement involved tear gas and less-lethal rounds to disperse crowds. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass remarked on SGV Tribute, "Sometimes people who aren't even a part of the main protest hang around, and then that's where you can have trouble," about the fringes of Saturday's events.
Further incidents in the region included a suspected hit-and-run during a Riverside protest, which left a woman severely injured. Riverside police are treating the incident as an assault with a deadly weapon.
