One year into the fight against organized retail crime, Attorney General Dave Sunday has announced significant progress thanks to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and community partners. Speaking in the Philadelphia area, Sunday outlined the victories of the Organized Retail Crime Unit since its inception on July 1, 2024, a response to a new criminal statute under Act 42, which elevates retail theft of goods over $50,000 to a first-degree felony.
The unit has been busy, initiating more than 65 investigations, charging over 40 alleged thieves, and recovering nearly $2 million in stolen merchandise. Teams of thieves have been hitting retailers hard, using sophisticated tactics like manipulating gift cards and exploiting return/exchange policies. They often storm into stores en masse, grabbing as much as they can as quickly as possible, in a brute force approach that smacks of organization and intent.
In a statement obtained by paCAST, Attorney General Sunday said, "This unit is aggressively pursuing thieves who operate in packs, oftentimes terrorizing purely innocent store employees and shoppers." He is clear about his stance; the old view of retail theft as a petty nuisance is obsolete, considering the violence and intimidation tactics currently in play.
The Organized Retail Crime Unit's proactive stance is demonstrating its effectiveness. As the unit continues making arrests and recovering property, the message to potential offenders is crystallizing. And, this isn't a lone effort; partnerships are pivotal, with local law enforcement and the community at large playing integral roles in addressing what is becoming an ever more pressing issue. "With the help of our partners, we have made big strides in stopping these criminal enterprises, and sending a strong message to anyone thinking of committing these crimes," Sunday emphasized.
