Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has officially wrapped up its International Arrivals Improvements Project, the first accomplishment in the large-scale Journey With AUS expansion program. The project, which was aimed at modernizing and elevating the international travel experience at AUS, comes in response to the growing travel needs in the Central Texas area.
The upgrades include a sizeable 20,600 square feet of expanded space, new baggage claim carousels, and better facilities for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Aimed at improving efficiency and passenger comfort, the project introduces dual-use carousels for both domestic and international flights and a special carousel for oversized luggage, according to a statement released from the City of Austin's official website. This development is a piece of the puzzle towards a more seamless travel environment at AUS, aligning with the broader look of what's presumed to be an increasingly globalized future.
In the words of Ghizlane Badawi, CEO of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, "This project is a defining example of how we’re shaping the future of air travel in Austin." Badawi also commented on the strategic significance of the project, pointing to the prospect of providing a more connection-oriented and passenger-centric airport moving forward.
A combination of enhanced queuing areas, a new layout designed for improved passenger flow, and additional baggage carousels aims to reduce wait times and manage crowds more effectively during the airport's busiest periods. The project comes with a price tag of approximately $13.8 million and was funded through various airport sources, which include airport cash reserves, revenues, and revenue bond proceeds. The primary contractor for the project was Whiting-Turner, with Gensler stepping in as the designer. As stated on the City of Austin's official website, this phase is but one step in AUS's strategic investment plan to escalate the airport's capacity significantly over the next five years.
This initiative paves the way for future expansions, which include a new Arrivals and Departures Hall, currently under design, and renovations to the Barbara Jordan Terminal.
