Baltimore County has ushered in a new era of inclusivity with the grand opening of an accessible trail at Rocky Point Park in Essex, a move that county officials and the local community have celebrated. Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier was on hand to cut the proverbial ribbon on this $1 million project backed by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which promises improved waterfront access for visitors of all abilities.
The new trail boasts a range of amenities designed to ensure that everyone can appreciate the natural ambiance of this beloved locale. Walkways and sidewalks have been constructed using environmentally conscious materials, including recycled tire rubber. By utilizing reinforced concrete boardwalk planks, supported by helical piles that transfer the load to more stable soil substrates, the design aims to be both durable and ecologically sound. Additionally, the trail features a pavilion equipped with a grill, accessible parking, and seating festooned with recycled plastics. Native plantings bring a touch of greenery to the tableau, while pre-existing playground upgrades reinforce the county's commitment to holistic recreational spaces.
Bob Smith, Baltimore County's Director of Recreation and Parks, emphasized the broader significance of the trail within the community's fabric. He noted, "Baltimore County is focused on making recreation accessible for all people," per the Baltimore County's press release, while highlighting the local government's initiative toward high-quality, diverse, and accessible recreational facilities and programs.
