To curb gun-related tragedies, Baltimore County Public Libraries are offering free gun safety locks to patrons during June, a period recognized as National Gun Violence Awareness Month. According to a WBALTV report, library visitors aged 18 and over can pick up these safety devices at library branches, no proof of residency required. The initiative, a collaboration between the Baltimore County Department of Health’s Bureau of Behavioral Health (BBH) and the library system, is responding to sobering statistics that firearms were used in 47% of all suicide deaths in the county from 2020 to 2024.
Baltimore County Public Library CEO, Sonia Alcántara-Antoine, highlighted the library's role as a vital community hub, "As a community connector, Baltimore County Public Library is a trusted institution where people from all walks of life are welcomed and included, making us an ideal location to distribute free gun safety locks," as per her statement, detailed by FOX Baltimore. The partnership also aims to provide resources on safe gun storage, suicide prevention, and a $50,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Health is funding the project to target veteran suicide prevention.
While the rollout of the safety initiative is county-wide, some branches will have temporary closures due to unrelated maintenance. The Loch Raven branch is scheduled for roof repairs from June 2 through June 7, and the White Marsh Branch will be closed until late summer for building improvements. The public should note. For individuals or families facing crises, support is available at any hour through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, with free and confidential conversations assured.
