Baltimore's demographic landscape is undergoing a shift, according to the latest census data. The Hispanic community in the city witnessed a significant growth of nearly 5% in the past year, as detailed in a report by WBALTV. This surge is a part of the wider diversification Maryland is experiencing, with all 23 counties in the state recording increases in both Hispanic and Asian populations.
Amidst the burgeoning numbers, individuals like Julia Fernandez represent the success stories within these communities. Fernandez, who moved to the U.S. from Honduras at a tender age of 13, emphasized the community's work ethic and pursuit of opportunity. "The Hispanic community, we are hard workers. And wherever we find work, we go there," she said, as per WBALTV.
However, not all demographic trends are characterized by growth. As per the FOX Baltimore report, Baltimore's Black population has experienced a decline, continuing a trend seen over recent years. Specifically, there has been a decrease of 0.8% in the Black population from July 2023 to July 2024, culminating in a 5% drop since the 2020 census—a trend mirrored only by Prince George’s, Talbot County, and Worcester counties in Maryland.
Conversely, the city's white population remained largely unchanged, shrinking by only 63 individuals from the previous year. Overall, Baltimore's demographics now stand at 59% Black, 27% white, 9% Hispanic, 3% Asian, and 2% people of two or more races, reflecting an almost 3% dip in the city's population since 2020.
