The integrity of the Bexar County Jail is under scrutiny following a significant drug bust that resulted in eight arrests and investigations involving former deputies, according to KENS 5 and News 4 San Antonio. The investigation, which began after a substantial drug seizure in April, was explained by Sheriff Javier Salazar; it led to the firing of three deputies, though, at the time, no charges were brought against them.
During a search inside the facility, approximately 105 grams of methamphetamine, 69 grams of marijuana, 10 Xanax tablets, along with an unidentified brown waxy substance and THC vape pens, were seized, sparking the investigation into the jail's operations and a wider probe into drug trafficking tied to both inmates and individuals outside the jail, including deputies whose own sworn duty was to prevent such breaches in the system. As per News 4 San Antonio, an informant within the jail played a crucial role, facilitating an undercover operation that culminated in a transaction to smuggle drugs inside.
The arrested civilians include Joann Garcia, Noe Martinez, Noemi Aracely Cortez, and Jose Ramos; while the implicated inmates are Xavier Rico, Carlos Gonzalez, Ruben Ceciliano, and Ronnie Barnhardt, who Sheriff Salazar confirms are now facing additional charges. KENS 5 reports that three former deputies were implicated in the scandal—Mayweather, Avina, and Plata—whose tenures at the sheriff's department were short-lived and ended amid the investigation's findings.
"There's a strong possibility other deputies are involved," Salazar told News 4 San Antonio, indicating a deeper issue within the department which could unravel further as the investigation progresses, and the sheriff assertively adds, "I think those deputies should be worried if they are involved." While there have been no arrests of the former deputies as of yet, sufficient evidence for policy violations has been gathered to support their terminations, Salazar notes the department is forging ahead to build a comprehensive criminal case against them.
