
In the early hours yesterday, a three-car accident in Brooklyn resulted in critical injuries for two NYPD officers. A 24-year-old driver is now facing DWI charges related to the incident, as reported by CBS News. The crash at the intersection of Avenue U and Coney Island Avenue occurred just after 2 a.m, where Diyorjon Sobirjonov, the alleged drunk driver, collided with another vehicle and subsequently a police car that was in the process of response, the NYPD reports a driver of a Volvo involved in the calamity came away without injury.
Initial details from the NYPD, obtained by ABC7NY, stated that there were four people injured, including the two police officers now listed in critical condition and two passengers from Sobirjonov's vehicle. The crash resulted in a chain reaction that led to the Chevy colliding with a marked police car which had its lights on at the time of the incident.
Witnesses described the sound of the crash as extremely loud, one resident believed "something hit the building, like a bomb went off," according to the eyewitness account given to CBS News. The collision's consequences unfolded as emergency services worked quickly to assess and transport the victims, with one witness relating the immediate aftermath: "They started taking everybody out on the stretchers, but it was a terrible mess."
Sobirjonov, who is now in custody, faces multiple serious charges, including six counts of reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated, according to CBS News. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the events that led to the crash. Two of Sobirjonov’s passengers—a 30-year-old man in stable condition and a 31-year-old man in critical condition—were taken to local hospitals along with the injured officers. The driver and passenger of the Volvo declined medical treatment.
