As June blooms on the calendar, it heralds not just the advent of summer but also a newfound focus on the underpinned foundation of America's urban tapestry – the small city. Acknowledging the contribution of small cities to the nation's rich mosaic, Mayor Barbara Foushee of Carrboro has designated June as Small Cities Month, as per the Town of Carrboro, a recent proclamation issued today.
With the declaration in effect, Mayor Foushee urges not only the local cohorts but also the vast apparatus of the federal government, Congressional allies, state legislators, and both public and private entities to lean into the observance. The proclamation underscores a collaborative spirit, one that aims to fortify these smaller municipalities through various services and programs aimed at bolstering life quality for residents. According to the Town of Carrboro, "Small cities and towns strive to strengthen their communities," the mayor states, highlighting the essential services that sustain the lifeblood of these localized hubs.
This June, Small Cities Month will feature events and initiatives highlighting how residents, businesses, and governments support small cities. The month aims to recognize the important role these towns play in the nation’s growth and community life.
