Charlotte Firehouse 21's crew had an unexpectedly life-changing call earlier this year when they responded to reports of abdominal pain and ended up delivering a baby no one knew was coming. On January 5, the crew found 22-year-old Halena Khen in distress, only to realize she had given birth to a seemingly stillborn baby on her bedroom floor—a baby who then made a tiny but critical cry, according to an article published by the City of Charlotte.
The firefighters had to quickly learn to improvise a response. "We were dispatched for abdominal pain, nothing more," Captain Shane Fields told the City of Charlotte. However, when Firefighters Stephen Taylor and Grant White realized the situation, they began emergency care on the infant and her mother. The baby, held in one hand by Taylor, was so small that her feet didn't reach his watchband. In an unexpected turn of events, the team raced to provide her with oxygen and rushed her to the hospital.
This wasn't your typical call for the Charlotte firefighters. The baby, named Leilani Chavis, was born around 20 to 22 weeks and weighed only one pound and seven ounces. Despite the long odds, after months of intensive care, Leilani was released from the hospital in early May, as the City of Charlotte reports. On Father’s Day, in a heartwarming reunion, she met the crew at Firehouse 21—remarkably off oxygen during the day and thriving.
"What we saw that day didn't even look real. Her skin was translucent. You could see every vein," said White, reflecting on the day of the birth. According to the City of Charlotte, Firehouse 21's crew has followed Leilani's journey from the start, finding hope and fulfillment in her progress. For the crew, including Taylor, who had only just begun his service at Firehouse 21, the experience has served to quickly cement a lasting bond among them.
Firehouse 21’s members have treasured this rare opportunity for closure, a sentiment echoed by Captain Fields: "You never get the last paragraph," Fields told the City of Charlotte. "But today, we did." The community also acknowledges the firefighters for their quick and decisive action that day. Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson praised the crew, saying, “I’m proud of the crew at Firehouse 21 and grateful they were there for this family on that day."
