A tragic incident unfolded on a Michigan highway on Wednesday when a 35-year-old Clinton Township man died in a rollover accident. MLive reports that the man, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was the sole occupant of a commercial truck within a construction zone on southbound U.S. 23, south of Lee Road.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 6:38 a.m., where they found the construction vehicle, a truck typically used for roadway line painting, had rolled. According to WHMI, the driver was pinned inside and, despite quick efforts to extricate him and provide medical aid, was pronounced dead at the crash site. The man had been contracted for construction duties on the freeway, found in a section where traffic lanes shift, the police said.
The incident brought considerable disruption to the morning commute, closing southbound U.S. 23 for approximately five hours. All lanes were eventually reopened. The crash is currently under investigation by the Livingston County Major Crash Team, looking into what caused the man to lose control of the truck. While the vehicle involved is usually associated with pavement marking, it was not in use for that purpose at the time of the accident.
