Recent eruptions of violence in Los Angeles have prompted a response from House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement Chairman Clay Higgins (R-La.), as they launch an investigation into the incidents. In the midst of federal immigration enforcement actions targeting the removal of dangerous criminal illegal aliens, Los Angeles has been gripped by severe unrest. The committee has sent out letters seeking information from California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, specifically requesting documents and communications among their offices and law enforcement agencies at multiple levels concerning the riots and the origins of the rioters' weaponry.
On June 8, 2025, as violence escalated, President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of the National Guard to restore order. Both Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass sharply criticized the President's move, according to a statement made by the House Oversight Committee. They claimed that the riots had been under control by local law enforcement before the arrival of the National Guard, an assertion contested by Representatives Comer and Higgins, who pointed to the apparent inability of local police to quickly reestablish peace.
"You champion California’s sanctuary policies, which prevent local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities. You have also made it clear that you intend to block the objectives of the federal government, and defend aliens, regardless of their immigration status, criminal activity, anti-American views, or incitement to riot," Comer and Higgins stated, as reported by the House Oversight Committee.
Subcommittee Chairman Higgins have also reached out to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel to proactively provide documents related to the violent acts against law enforcement officers during the California riots. A comprehensive account of the law enforcement's reaction to the incidents is also sought.
