Flag Day this year in Dearborn is set to include a ceremonial retirement for unserviceable American flags, with city officials and veterans coming together at Ford Field Park tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event, held at 22501 Cherry Hill St., is open to the public and will follow the American Legion's prescribed flag burning protocols to honor the Continental Congress's adoption of the flag in 1777.
In a bid to maintain the respect due to the national emblem, the City of Dearborn has made provisions for the collection of damaged and discolored flags throughout the year, these flags are then passed on to Stars for Our Troops, a group recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense for their meticulous flag retirement process which includes cleaning, cutting, and embroidering the salvaged stars to be shared with those serving our country, both past and present, including their families.
The Dearborn Administrative Center at 16901 Michigan Ave is the designated drop-off point for the flags, which the city collects Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., except on City holidays. The guidelines specify that donated flags should have stars no larger than 2 inches and be clearly labeled as "Made in the USA" or produced by a NIFDA or FMAA member company.
