The Denver Police Department recently took a dip into the past with a throwback post, reminiscing about the Juneteenth celebration in 1992. Sharing an image from the archives, the post was teeming with nostalgia for a time when Boyz II Men's ballad "End of the Road" reigned supreme, and a gallon of gas would set you back just over a buck.
According to the Denver Police Department, the snapshot was captured at the Juneteenth festivities, when the officers were stationed as members of the Urban Street Crime Bureau. The unit, colloquially known then as the Gang Unit, is showcased grabbing lunch, particularly pig ear sandwiches from Zona’s Tamales, a culinary detail that might seem peculiar to today's palates.
In the throwback photo, figures like Sergeant Goodfellow, Officer Brad Rhodes, and Lieutenant Paul Berdahl hark back to the era of Zona’s Tamales. The post, laden with '90s pop culture and economic references, presents a tableau of a bygone era, juxtaposing today’s economic landscape against that of over three decades ago. The officers, some with hair, some without, represent layers of a city’s narrative, defenders of the community fabric at a significant cultural event.
