As Denver braces for another hot summer, city officials are doubling down on efforts to keep residents cool, which is more than just a matter of comfort; it's a public health priority. The Denver Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency is partnering with local agencies to distribute portable air conditioning units and air purifiers to communities that are most vulnerable to the heat. This initiative follows a series of scorching heat waves in summer 2024 that pushed temperatures in Denver to a record-breaking 105°F.

According to the City and County of Denver, the Climate Prediction Center anticipates a 60% to 70% chance that parts of Colorado will experience hotter-than-average conditions this summer. Wildfires, exacerbated by the heat, are expected to worsen air quality, putting the health and well-being of residents at risk, not just outside, but inside their homes as well.

The city's quest to mitigate these compounding hazards led to the creation of a mini-grant program administered by CASR. The program specifically targets nonprofit and community-based organizations, empowering them to deliver tangible solutions to those in need. So far, this initiative has provided 55 portable air conditioning units and 508 air purifiers to several neighborhoods known for their susceptibility to heat and poor air quality.

Among the recipients of the mini-grants are organizations like Energy Outreach Colorado and Mile High Youth Corps, both instrumental in addressing the climate-related adversities faced by low-income neighborhoods. The equipment has been directed to places like Globeville, Elyria-Swansea, Montbello, and Valverde. These targeted efforts are expected to not only improve living conditions but also reduce carbon pollution in the process.
