Durham residents, take note - the Fourth of July brings more than just fireworks and festivities; it also means a shuffle in city services. The City of Durham is gearing up to observe Independence Day, and they've announced some significant adjustments to their normal operations. City Hall and other non-emergency facilities will be taking the day off on Friday, everyone, and before you go throwing your trash curbside with an American flag sticker to show off your patriotism, you should know that the Solid Waste Management Department will also be closed.
Despite the closure, garbage and recycling pick-up services will continue as usual, so you can freely continue to endlessly consume and discard, just as our forefathers intended. However, if you've planned to do some gardening and need to dispose of your yard waste, you're going to have to wait until July 7. As reported by the City of Durham, the Waste Disposal and Recycling Center along with the Household Hazardous Waste Center will not be bidding you welcome on the Fourth either.
For those looking to celebrate the holiday with sports or a splash, Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) has got your back. While the administrative office and rec centers will be closed on July 4, athletic fields, courts, and picnic shelters will still be up for rental. Outdoor pools and spray grounds, as well as city lakes, are sticking to their regular schedules, open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Friday through Monday. For those betting on the night skies being lit by fireworks, DPR is hosting a celebration at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Gates open at the end of the seventh inning, and firework displays are expected to start at 9:15 p.m., conditions permitting. If you're looking for prime viewing spots outside the park, you've got options like the grassy area behind Diamond View 3, or for a different vibe, the Tobacco Road Sports Café and Ponysaurus Brewing.
And let's not forget the parking situation. Independence Day means free parking in on-street spaces, some city garages, and lots, which is always a welcome bonus for event-goers. For more detailed information on this, you can check out the Park Durham Customer Service Center, although they'll be closed on the Fourth. Do remember, parking rates at Durham Centre Garage switch up to $7 per vehicle rate 90 minutes before scheduled events, and you might want to check the Special Event Parking Calendar to keep ahead of the game.
If you depend on public transit to navigate through Durham, GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS services will be operating on Sunday-level service for the holiday. That means reduced schedules, folks, so plan your travels accordingly. To stay on top of any service changes, including detours, you can call GoDurham or follow their updates on X.
